New pastoral role…

5 11 2008

So I’ve come to a conclusion with regards to my role as a pastor.  That role is to disturb you!  Each week I’m there to shake up your world and get you to think about God in a brand new light.  Maybe from an angle that you’ve never thought about before.  I also want to push you to live out your faith so that you don’t become a complacent and lazy Christian that’s only concerned about your own comfort.

How do I know if I’m doing this?  I’m not sure.  One way is when I start getting death threats or get egged while preaching.  Right now I know I do this through my conversations with people that are a part of TXC.  When I hear someone say “I hate you”, Bingo!  I know I’ve nailed it.  When someone walks in trying to make everyone else think they’ve got it together.  They’ve got a nice car.  A big house.  Great family.  But underneath it all they’re broken.  I want to be able to reveal the truth of Jesus in a way where that man or women come to a place where they can be honest with themselves and the rest of us.  Where they can admit that are in need of Jesus.  That life isn’t as rosy as it might look on the outside.

And you know what’s interesting?  The more of us that get to this place, the easier it is to live in community together.  The more enjoyable life is.  Because everyone around us isn’t faking it anymore.  They’re able to admit their messiness and now so are you!

At the end of it all, I don’t want to just disturb you so that you can leave all dejected and depressed because you’re a screw up and there’s no hope.  The point is that we are all screwed up and there’s only one solution to the mess.  Jesus.  He’s the hope.  He’s the one who picks up the shattered pieces and puts us back together the way that he originally created us to be.  We’re all on a level playing field.  I may be the pastor of TXC but I’m no less in need of the grace of Jesus than the next person.  Without it, I’m lost just as much as you are.

So disturb I will.  The cage of comfort we like to stay in has been unlocked.  In essence, we’ve already been broken free.  All we have to do is open the door.  Part of my role as a pastor is to convince you to walk through the door and into the life you were meant to live.
